From the ashes of war to the pinnacle of English football, this is the extraordinary story of Matt Busby and the rise of Manchester United.
In 1945, United were a club in decline – trophyless for decades and without a home after the bombing of Old Trafford. But under Busby’s visionary leadership, and with the invaluable support of his trusted assistant Jimmy Murphy, everything changed. What followed was the creation of not one, but four great teams – champions who redefined English football and boldly stepped onto the European stage.
This book brings that remarkable journey to life through rare interviews with Busby himself and the players who made history. From league triumphs and FA Cup glory to the fierce battle to enter the European Cup, the story captures a revolution in football culture and ambition.
Then, on 6 February 1958, tragedy struck. The Munich air disaster shattered a team – and nearly claimed Busby’s life. Eight players were lost, and a golden generation was gone in an instant.
Rich with firsthand accounts, detailed statistics, and powerful storytelling, this is more than a chronicle of matches – it is a portrait of resilience, vision, and enduring legacy.
Demob To Belgrade is for anyone who wants to understand the soul of a great football club, this is essential reading.
